Heart Disease

Periodontal and gum disease can also increase the chance of heart disease. If you have gum disease in a moderate or advanced stage you have a greater risk for heart disease. The bacteria from your mouth can spread to your heart and inflame damaged parts of your heart. Make sure to get diagnosed if you think you have gingivitis and treat it so it does not turn into heart disease.

Gingivitis is contagious. It can be transmitted through kissing, coughing, sneezing and sharing foods through a type of glass or cup.

Gingivitis can lead to periodontitis if not treated. Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone which supports the teeth.

Gingivitis can be prevented or reversed in 7-14 with proper brushing and flossing twice a day.

How do you brush and floss properly?

Use an ADA approved toothpaste. Brush thoroughly in circular motions around the gum line on both your upper and lower arches of teeth. For flossing, a floss pick or string floss can get the job done. To floss, you should use a 12-15 inch length of floss. For the maxillary teeth, direct the floss up by holding the floss over the two thumbs. For the mandibular teeth, direct the floss down by holding the two index fingers on the top of the strand. Go back and forth in a seesaw motion so the floss does not snap between the teeth and cut the tissue.
