Oral thrush is mostly found in babies, the elderly, immunocompromised, asthma patients, and alcohol abusers.

Babies- Breastfeeding creates yeast buildup. To get rid of the yeast practice good oral hygiene, this means having the parent gently brush the child's teeth with toothpaste. However, if there are no teeth present, take a tip of a face cloth to get rid of the yeast, wet it and gently swab the baby’s gums also, be sure to have regular check-ups. The ADA recommends the parent should bring their child to the dentist by age 1. The parent can also discuss with their child's doctor about adding yogurt to the diet when taking medicine since it is a good probiotic, but only if there are no allergies.

Elderly- Loose fitting or unclean dentures; to clean dentures rinse them out and gently brush them with either a denture or a regular toothbrush. Be sure to rinse the mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash after removing the dentures. Ask a dentist for more recommendations about cleaning dentures.

Immunocompromised- Weak immune system; the body is not strong enough to fight off the disease. Taking medications such as prednisone, inhaled corticosteroids, or antibiotics may increase the development of yeast.

Asthma Patients- Taking corticosteroid inhaler and not rinsing after can increase the presence of yeast.

Alcohol Abusers- Constant drinking with lack of care for the mouth creates more yeast.
