Smoking and Vaping

Smoking

Smoking is the process of smoking and inhaling tobacco smoke, which is full of carcinogens and nicotine. Smoking is highly addictive and affects many Americans. Smoking is also linked to heart problems. Click here for more heart health information.

How Can I Quit Smoking

Smoking is a major preventable risk factor for heart disease. It affects not only the smokers themselves, but also non-smokers who get exposed to the second-hand smoke.

It’s never too late to quit, no matter how long you have smoked, when you quit your risk of heart disease drastically decreases. One year of not smoking drops your risk by 50% and by fifteen years your risk drops to as if you had never smoked.

Nicotine:

  • prevents the body from producing saliva, which causes dry mouth and leads to tooth decay
  • reduces blood flow and deprives the gums of oxygen, causing gum recession which is the pulling away of the gingiva (gums) from the tooth

  • “fires up” muscles, causing grinding of teeth which leads to tooth damage

  • slows down the process of healing, including the healing of cold or canker sores, cuts in the mouth, and post-surgical wounds

There are many types of vaping devices, with Juuls being the most common among teenagers and young adults. Juul pods:

    • Have chemicals that have had minimal research and have mostly unknown effects on the body

    • include an abnormally high amount of benzoic acid, a chemical known to cause sore throat, coughing, abdominal pain, nausea, canker sores, and vomiting

      • Juul pods contain over 22 times more benzoic acid than other e-cigarettes in order to increase the potency of nicotine salts and increase the rate of addiction

    • contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes in a single pod
